Back to School Plans

Back-to-School Plans for the
2020-2021 School Year
USD 435 is committed to a safe learning environment for students and staff. Based on the spread of COVID-19 in Dickinson County, we will be providing our students with the following options for the start of the school year.

OPTION ONE
Face to Face Instruction with Masks and Social Distancing where Possible

What does this look like?
We will do everything we can to provide typical teacher-student interaction in a classroom setting. When staff and students in the room are not able to maintain least 6 feet of distance from each other, we will require the wearing of masks.

OPTION TWO
Remote Learning

What does this look like?

PreK-3rd Grade
Students will include the use of real time participation in class, Zoom meetings, and recorded lessons and activities via Seesaw. Students will have breaks throughout the day for lunch and physical activity. Specials teachers will provide art, music, and P.E. lesson weekly for participation, as well. Access to quality teaching for effective learning will be provided to all learners.

4th-12th Grade
Students will include the use of Zoom for REAL TIME participation in class.

All students participating remote learning will be required to have an attendance log signed and submitted by a parent or specified guardian. The attendance log is a requirement of the Kansas State Department of Education to document a student's participation in instructional activities.

The district will provide iPads and the technology support provided last spring.

Note: Abilene Public Schools believes students who are participating in remote learning are doing so primarily due to concerns about potential health risks. Students who wish to remain in or participate in extra-curricular activities are encouraged to do so, keeping in mind the nature of the activity and the potential health risks involved as they make these decisions.

OPTION THREE (available to grades 9-12 ONLY)
Abilene Virtual School

What does this look like?

Students who enroll in Abilene Virtual School will receive instruction through an online program monitored by AHS teachers. School work in AVS is consistent with what students in the traditional classroom work on. Almost all core classes can be covered with AVS, while most elective courses will take place in Abilene High School. Students who would like to participate in extra-curricular activities as an AVS student may do so, as long as they are enrolled in at least one class in AHS. Students who choose this option become full time virtual students and must take at least 4 online courses, with additional classes at AHS to supplement their online courses.

For more information on Abilene Virtual School, please contact Brian Roth at broth@abileneschools.org or call the District Office at 785-263-2630.
